Groningen Airport Eelde and New Energy Coalition are going to cooperate. The parties will work together intensively to make the airport more sustainable through hydrogen applications. It is the ambition of Groningen Airport Eelde to become the most sustainable airport in Europe. This collaboration fits in with the hydrogen goals of the North Netherlands region. The airport is located in the middle of Europe’s first Hydrogen Valley. With this collaboration Groningen Airport Eelde is the first Hydrogen Valley Airport.

Hydrogen ambitions Groningen Airport Eelde

Groningen Airport Eelde focuses on making aviation and airports more sustainable with the NXT Airport initiative. Together with educational institutions, the business community and governments, sustainability innovations are worked on within projects. The main focus is on hydrogen technology. The airport’s ambition is to produce green hydrogen on the airport grounds and to be able to deploy it on both land and air sides for innovative applications.

Hydrogen infrastructure

Between the runway, platform and taxiway at Groningen Airport Eelde, a solar park with a capacity of 21.9 MW has been constructed by GroenLeven. Groningen Airport Eelde and GroenLeven want to use electrolysis to produce green hydrogen at the airport.

This green hydrogen can then be applied in many ways. For example, the plan is to create a multi-fuel fueling station that serves both land and air sides. On landside, for example, passenger cars, trucks and intercity buses can refuel. On the air side, this will serve ground handling equipment, hydrogen drones and hydrogen aircraft in the future.

Ground handling Groningen Airport Eelde emission free in 2030

Groningen Airport Eelde wants to have a fully emission-free ground handling system by 2030. The airport plans to use water dust applications in particular for this purpose. Together with Holthausen Clean Technology, we are looking at converting existing equipment and also developing innovative hydrogen-powered ground equipment; which does not exist in the market today.

New Energy Coalition Collaboration

Marieke Abbink-Pellenbarg, Managing Director of New Energy Coalion, is pleased with the collaboration: “New Energy Coalition Foundation connects parties to create collaborations for an accelerated transition to a sustainable energy economy. In addition to road, water and rail transport, we can now include air transport in the Hydrogen Valley. This is a very valuable addition and strengthens the position of the Hydrogen Valley, the testing ground for hydrogen development in the Northern Netherlands. We will use our knowledge and network to help Groningen Airport Eelde achieve their ambition to become the most sustainable hydrogen-powered airport in Europe.”
